Sweden: Stockholm, Skansen

For our last day in Stockholm, Nada and me wanted to visit the Vasa Museum, but when we came there the row to enter was just too long. We quickly changed our plans and we decided to visit Skansen, the first open-air museum and zoo in Sweden. We needed the whole day to explore it and when we came back home, our hosts Srbo and Adela left us a full table for dinner with awesome food and drinks.

Previous days of our "Stockholm" trip: Day 3Day 2, Day 1.

Once again we turned into the forest before we went on a bus

Back on the train

The ferry took us past Skeppsholmen and Kastellholmen islands

Kastellet Castle on Kastellholmen and Gröna Lund, an amusement park on island Djurgården

Gamla stan - The Old Town on island Stadsholmen

The first fortification on the location was built in 1667 designed by Erik Dahlbergh. It exploded in June 1845 and subsequently a new was built 1846-1848 to the design of architect Fredrik Blom. It consists of a round tower with red brick walls and a 20 meter high stair tower. On the top flies the Military Ensign of Sweden, it is hoisted and lowered every day, indicating the nation is at peace.

Where next? Towards Vasamuseet.

We skipped the ABBA Museum, since our yesterday's guide said he still wakes up at night with ABBA songs in his head.

A big portion of Djurgården consists of green areas offering footpaths and water front promenades among present or historical upper class residences and old institutional buildings, many of which are regarded as historical monuments of national interest.

Entrance fee for Skansen was 12,55 €

Skansen is the world’s oldest open-air museum, showcasing the whole of Sweden with houses and farmsteads from every part of the country.

Up until the early twentieth century grey seals were common in the Baltic and they were a popular prey.

Feeding and playing time. The population in the Baltic Sea has increased about 8% per year between 1990 and the mid-2000s with the numbers becoming stagnant since 2005.

Seals are mammals that have adapted to a life in water.

The reindeer found in the Swedish mountains today belong to Sami who rear them. There are no wild reindeer in Sweden.

Sami culture was represented at Skansen right from the very beginning.

Sami Camp

The impressive moose is known as the king of the forest. In the early 20th century the moose were almost wiped out, but now there are plenty of them in the forrests of Sweden.

Random visitor, a squirrel

Lunch break was over

The brown bear (Ursus arctos) is Sweden’s largest predator.

The great grey owl, or Lapland owl, hunts in meadows, marshland and other open spaces, while lynx is Sweden's only wild feline.

The wolf is the ancestor of all modern-day dogs. It mainly lives off moose and other large prey.

The Zoo area was behind us and we moved on to farmstead zone.

Tourists

Kids and peacocks, that freely run across the area.
