ItalyCinque Terre, Ferry (Trip to Sardinia Day 2)

10 years ago, Tadej and me visited Sardinia with motorbikes and this year we decided to do it again, this time with Nada and Maja.

On our second day we continued riding. First we had to pass the Northern Apennines (Appennino settentrionale). We did that by riding over 3 passes, Passo di Zovallo (1405 m), Passo di Tomario (1494 m) and Passo di Cento Croci (1055 m) and we successfully came from region Emilia-Romagna to Liguria.

Good morning in Parco Regionale Adda Sud.

Passo di Cento Croci (1055 m), entering Liguria

Curves and small villages

The village of Fontona with Levanto by the sea

Our stop was scheduled in Cinque Terre, meaning "Five Lands", which comprises of five villages: Monterosso al Mare, Vernazza, Corniglia, Manarola, and Riomaggiore. We wanted to walk from the first village to the second, but soon we turned around. Bloody someone decided that you have to pay 12€ for walking in the nature. So we just rode to the 2nd village.

Monterosso al Mare was the first village we visited

On our way to the 2nd village, Vernazza

The Castle, partially ruined, built by the Genoese

12€ for bloody walking. Insane.

The rock in Ligurian Sea

Good-bye Monterosso al Mare. The village was briefly excluded from the Cinque Terre trail in 1948, but was re-introduced in mid-1949. Italian officials considered the village too large to be considered part of the historic trail.

Approaching Vernazza

Entering the village

View from the town's main square Piazza Marconi

Narrow streets and Doria Castle - built in the 15th century as a lookout tower to protect the village from pirates.

Church of Santa Margherita d'Antiochia, constructed in 1318 in Ligurian gothic style by the Maestri Antelami.

One of the truest "fishing villages" on the Italian Riviera

Lunch time. Small pizza and big beer.

We finished our Cinque Terre visit and started riding to Livorno, Tuscany, where we boarded the overnight ferry to Sardinia.
