Kenya: Day 7: Mount Kenya, Part 5

This was our last day on the mountain. After a much warmer night, we realized in the morning, that we got sunburned. It was really sunny yesterday and a bit windy, so we didn't feel it. Our legs, shoulders and backs also didn't want to continue, but they had to. We didn't have much more to hike today.

After the soup and last peaces of home salami we packed the tent for the last time and we started to descent to the Park Gate of Mount Kenya National Park. After an hour and a half we were there. We checked out and then the bargaining began for the transport back to civilization, that was still 30 kilometres away. In the end we settled for 3500 KES (30€) for a combined ride jeep/motorbikes. Still expensive, but much better than 90$ from yesterday. On the way down we saw nice plantations of coffea, rice and tea.

In Chogoria I went shopping for the food for the matatu ride and I bought bananas, green bananas to be exact and when I came back to the matatu they all laughed at me. How could I know that green bananas are for cooking only and they eat them instead of the potatoes? Well I know know, so I went back and I bought normal yellow bananas and a couple of passion fruits and soon we were on our way back to Nairobi. We decided we will cook the green bananas later. The matatu was totally full, we even had two passengers with names Hen and a Rooster. On our way the back door opened 3 times, luckily no luggage fell off. In the end the driver secured them with a string.

Back in Nairobi we just withdraw some more money for the upcoming expensive safari and we started to taste the Kenyan food, since so far we didn't want to experiment, mostly because of our hike to Mount Kenya.

Finally we were back "home" in Umoja and the water was running. Shower was awesome and a beer after that with our host Willys in Harry's Tavern also.

Well marked signpost. It was many years ago.

What a face.

Half way to Chogoria with a four-wheel drive.

The other half with motorbikes.

With our riders.

On the way we played with colours a bit. The land is really red here.
